Soul In the Bible, this term variously refers to the whole person (1 Pet 3:20), the life force within a person (Matt 16:25), or the eternal essence of a person which survives death (Rev 6:9; 20:4; Jas 1:21; 5:20). "Soul" and "spirit" are not entirely synonymous terms (1 Thes 5:23; Heb 4:12); yet they do sometimes refer to the non-material seat of a person's consciousness, mind, heart, and volition.
