Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Does any unintelligible religious speech establish the biblical gift of tongues?

Subject: Miracles, tongues and apostles

Claim examined: Unintelligible religious speech by itself proves that the speaker possesses the miraculous gift described in the New Testament.

Scriptural Answer

Acts 2 describes hearers recognizing their own languages in the apostles’ speech. First Corinthians 14 requires intelligibility and edification in the assembly, with interpretation for a tongue the hearers do not understand.

Paul limits the number of speakers, requires them to speak in turn, and instructs a speaker without an interpreter to keep silence in the church. Emotional intensity or a label does not establish the source of an utterance. Compare the claimed practice with the described gift, its purpose and the apostolic rules.
