Does the Lord’s Supper repeat Christ’s sacrifice or require literal transformation of its elements?
Subject: Catholic claims
Claim examined: The Lord’s Supper requires bread and the cup to become Christ’s literal flesh and blood, or constitutes a renewed sacrifice for sin.
Scriptural Answer
First Corinthians 11 describes the Supper as remembrance and proclamation of the Lord’s death. Paul continues to call the element bread after describing the Lord’s words. Hebrews 10 presents Christ’s offering as once for all.
John 6 must be read in the setting of Jesus’s teaching about receiving Him, believing and living by Him. Its language does not by itself establish a recurring sacrifice or an imperceptible transformation of communion elements. Christ’s words deserve reverence; their figurative forms should be read with the whole passage, not made into an ordinance the text does not state.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
