Does Ezekiel 36:25 establish sprinkling as New Testament baptism?
Subject: Salvation and faithful living
Claim examined: Ezekiel’s promise of sprinkling clean water establishes sprinkling as the practice described in Christian baptism accounts.
Scriptural Answer
Ezekiel 36:25-27 joins the promise of cleansing with a new heart and God’s Spirit. The prophet’s image of God sprinkling clean water concerns His promised cleansing; it does not narrate how the apostles administered baptism.
In Acts 8:36-39, the eunuch and Philip went down into the water and came up out of it. Paul describes baptism as burial with Christ and rising to new life (Romans 6:3-4). These texts supply the relevant apostolic descriptions.
A picture of divine cleansing in Ezekiel should not be made a procedural command that overrides the New Testament account. Baptism and the cleansing God gives must both be taken seriously.
