Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Does a sinner’s prayer replace the gospel response?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: Saying a prescribed prayer alone is presented as the New Testament means of entering Christ.

Scriptural Answer

Jesus commissioned His messengers to preach repentance and remission of sins in His name (Luke 24:46-47). Prayer is a proper response to God, but a spoken formula must not be substituted for what the apostles instructed their hearers to do.

At Pentecost those who asked what to do were told to repent and be baptized in Jesus Christ’s name for remission of sins; those who received Peter’s word were baptized (Acts 2:37-41). Saul had been praying, yet Ananias told him to arise, be baptized, and wash away his sins, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 9:11; 22:16).

Calling on the Lord therefore cannot be reduced to reciting a model prayer while setting aside His commands. The question is how the apostolic gospel calls a believer to respond.
