False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Does the New Testament place salvation before baptism?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: A person’s conversion is complete before baptism, which merely follows as an unrelated sign.

Scriptural Answer

Peter’s invitation places repentance and baptism for remission of sins before the promise to his hearers; those who received his word were baptized (Acts 2:37-41). Mark 16:16 joins believing and baptism in its statement about salvation.

When the jailer asked what he must do to be saved, Paul and Silas directed him to believe on the Lord, spoke the word of the Lord to his household, and baptized them that same night (Acts 16:30-34). The account should be read as a whole rather than stopping after its first instruction.

Only the Lord knows each person’s heart and final judgment. These passages nevertheless give no warrant to detach baptism from the apostolic conversion accounts.
