Did Christ appoint a universal earthly head over His church?
Subject: Catholic claims
Claim examined: A continuing earthly office holds universal headship over all congregations in place of Christ’s direct authority.
Scriptural Answer
Ephesians 1 and Colossians 1 identify Christ as the head of the church. First Peter 5 gives elders oversight of the flock among them and identifies Christ as the chief Shepherd. Local oversight is not universal earthly headship.
Matthew 16:18–19 must be read with Matthew 18:18 and the other apostolic passages. Peter’s role does not establish in those texts a continuing succession of universally ruling earthly heads. Require the proposed office and authority to be shown from the New Testament, rather than inferred from later institutional history.
