Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Can a saved believer never fall away?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: A person who has been saved cannot later turn from Christ and be lost.

Scriptural Answer

Hebrews warns its brothers to beware of an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God and to encourage one another daily (Hebrews 3:12-14). The warning is directed to a community called to hold its confidence firm.

Peter describes people who escaped the world’s corruption through knowledge of the Lord and then became entangled again, with their latter end worse than their beginning (2 Peter 2:20-22). Paul likewise warns believers that they can fall from grace by seeking justification in the law (Galatians 5:4).

God is faithful and gives grounds for assurance (John 10:27-29). That assurance should be held together with the passages urging believers to abide in Christ rather than presuming departure is impossible.
