Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Can someone today claim the same apostolic office as Christ’s original witnesses?

Subject: Miracles, tongues and apostles

Claim examined: A person today may claim the original apostles’ inspired authority solely on the basis of a title or a private experience.

Scriptural Answer

Acts 1 gives the qualifications used when replacing Judas: a witness of the Lord’s ministry and resurrection. Paul’s apostleship involved Christ’s appearance to him and was not merely a self-selected title.

Second Corinthians 12 refers to the signs of an apostle, and Ephesians 2 describes apostles and prophets in the foundation. A modern claim must supply the authority and qualifications Scripture gives. Ordinary gospel messengers do not acquire new binding revelation by adopting the title apostle.
