Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Are infants personally guilty of Adam’s sin at birth?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: Every infant personally bears guilt for Adam’s own transgression.

Scriptural Answer

Ezekiel says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor the father the iniquity of the son (Ezekiel 18:20). His chapter calls each person to turn from personal sin and live.

Romans 5:12-19 teaches that sin and death entered through Adam and compares Adam’s offense with Christ’s righteous act. Its account of the human condition must be considered alongside Ezekiel’s distinction concerning personal responsibility; it should not simply be treated as a statement that a newborn has performed Adam’s act.

James describes temptation and lust bringing forth sin (James 1:13-15), while Jesus receives little children and speaks of such as belonging to the kingdom (Matthew 19:13-14). God’s mercy in Christ and accountability for one’s own actions both matter.

Biblical Connections — Scripture comparison

Distinguish consequences from personal guilt → Read accountability for one’s own sin → Respect Christ’s treatment of children → Do not assign Adam’s guilt to an infant

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
