Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Does the New Testament teach infant baptism as a conversion practice?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: Infants are named as recipients of baptism on the same terms as believing and repentant converts.

Scriptural Answer

Peter told those who heard his preaching to repent and be baptized; the same account says those who received his word were baptized (Acts 2:38-41). In Samaria, men and women were baptized when they believed Philip’s preaching (Acts 8:12).

Jesus welcomed little children (Matthew 19:13-14), but that passage does not describe their baptism. Household baptism accounts deserve attention, yet none explicitly states that an infant was baptized apart from hearing or believing.

These passages do not establish infant baptism as the apostolic conversion response. The text should not be made to say more about any household’s ages than it actually says.
