Will moral goodness by itself save a person?
Subject: Salvation and faithful living
Claim examined: A person’s moral record alone is sufficient, with no need for Christ or the gospel.
Scriptural Answer
Paul says salvation is by grace through faith, not from ourselves or works of which one could boast (Ephesians 2:8-10). He also says Christ died for us while we were sinners (Romans 5:6-8). No person can replace that gift with an independent record of good deeds.
Jesus warns that saying “Lord, Lord” does not replace doing His Father’s will (Matthew 7:21). Cornelius was devout, generous, and prayerful; God sent Peter to speak words by which he and his house would be saved (Acts 10:1-6; 11:13-14).
Doing good matters, but it cannot become a separate way around the Lord who saves. We should speak of anyone’s final state with humility while following the gospel revealed in Scripture.
