Is every baptism called Christian automatically the baptism taught by the apostles?
Subject: Salvation and faithful living
Claim examined: The label or institution associated with a baptism alone settles whether it follows apostolic teaching.
Scriptural Answer
The New Testament describes baptism into Christ and His death (Romans 6:3-4), and Paul says those baptized into Christ have put on Christ (Galatians 3:27). Peter told his hearers to repent and be baptized in Jesus Christ’s name for remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
Acts 19:1-5 records people who had received John’s baptism but were then baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus when taught about Him. The account shows why a prior religious washing cannot be assessed solely by its label.
Scripture does not authorize judging a person only by a denominational name. Ask what the person was taught and did, and compare that with the apostolic message; the Lord is the final judge.
