Can a human creed become binding law for Christ’s church?
Subject: Religious authority
Claim examined: A human creed or denominational statement can supply binding doctrine beyond what Christ revealed.
Scriptural Answer
Second Timothy 3 describes Scripture’s role in furnishing the man of God; Second John 9 requires abiding in Christ’s doctrine. A human summary can be tested and used as an explanation, but it cannot become a new source of divine law.
First Corinthians 4:6 warns against going beyond what is written in the context of partisan pride. Use teaching summaries to direct readers back to the passages, not to replace examination or bind a requirement that the passages do not authorize.
