Is baptism unnecessary for remission of sins?
Subject: Salvation and faithful living
Claim examined: Water baptism may be omitted without affecting the apostolic promise of remission of sins.
Scriptural Answer
Peter answered convicted hearers by telling each to repent and be baptized in Jesus Christ’s name for the remission of sins (Acts 2:37-38). His answer does not describe baptism as an optional act unrelated to forgiveness.
Ananias instructed the believing Saul to arise and be baptized and wash away his sins, calling on the Lord’s name (Acts 22:16). Peter also says baptism now saves, while specifying that its significance is an appeal to God through Jesus Christ’s resurrection, not washing dirt from the body (1 Peter 3:21).
The saving power belongs to Christ. His commands and promises should be read together without treating water as a magical act or dismissing the response the apostles required.
