Question

False Doctrine Refuted — an original Scripture-based answer.

Is baptism merely an outward symbol with no connection to salvation?

Subject: Salvation and faithful living

Claim examined: Baptism depicts a past event only and has no role in the gospel response.

Scriptural Answer

Romans 6:3-4 describes those baptized into Christ Jesus as baptized into His death and buried with Him through baptism, so that they may walk in newness of life. The burial image is meaningful, but Paul also connects it to union with Christ.

Colossians 2:12 speaks of being buried and raised with Christ in baptism through faith in God’s operation. That wording attributes the effective work to God, not to a physical rite acting independently of faith.

Ananias told Saul to be baptized and wash away his sins, calling on the Lord (Acts 22:16). Scripture therefore says more than that baptism is a harmless public picture; it belongs within a trusting response to Christ.
