The rock, confession, and foundation of the church
Claim examined: Repentance, confession, and forgiveness
Scriptural Answer
The rock (Greek, petra) referred to here is not “St. Peter” as Catholics assert, but Jesus Christ Himself. The church of Christ is built upon the confession that Peter made in Matt 16:16, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This spiritual house (the church) is not built upon men as Catholics assert, but upon Jesus Christ who is the “chief cornerstone” (see 1 Pet 2:6). It is another assertion that “the overwhelming consensus of the great majority of all biblical scholars and commentators is in favor of the traditional Catholic understanding”. Peter is not the foundation of the church, it is Jesus Christ who holds this position! Did the builders reject Peter in 1 Pet 2:4, 7-8 or did they reject Christ? It is written in 1 Cor 3:11, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Peter may be the “foundation of the Catholic church” but I can assure you he is not the foundation of the Lord’s church.
